In reality, the best AI design tool depends more on what happens next, after the task is done, rather than on how polished its first output looks. For UX/UI teams choosing among AI UI design tools, the practical questions are whether the result remains editable, fits the design system, supports collaboration, and integrates with development without a manual rebuild.

This guide compares Figma AI, Figma Make, Google Stitch, Uizard, Midjourney, and Adobe Firefly by workflow, output, handoff, pricing, and limitations.

Hands-on observations are included only where Merge designers used or tested the tool, and documentation-only findings are labeled separately.

The prices and features below were checked on the official US vendor pages on 28 August 2026. However, AI pricing and features change often, so confirm current terms before you buy.

What we've noticed is that the sticker prices look affordable, but the credit or generation allowance is the real limit – that's the number vendors print in the smallest type. The further a tool's output is from your production file format, the more of its speed advantage you give back once you have to rebuild it.

How we selected and checked the tools

  • Audience: UX/UI and product designers evaluating AI tools for a real design-to-development workflow, not graphic designers or marketers.
  • Checked date and region: 28 August 2026, US pricing and feature pages.
  • Inclusion criteria: the tool has to do at least one of UI generation, prototyping, visual-asset creation, or developer handoff.
  • Comparison fields: best use, workflow stage, editable output and handoff, collaboration, pricing and credits, privacy and licensing, and the main limitation.
  • Evidence label for every tool: used by Merge, briefly tested by Merge, or official documentation reviewed – shown in the table above and repeated next to first-hand claims.
  • What we actually did: these write-ups come from Merge's own day-to-day tool use, two structured designer interviews conducted in August 2026, and vendor documentation for the one tool (Stitch) that no designer here has used on a client project. This is not a single side-by-side test run against a shared prompt set and identical tasks across all five tools on one day.

Top 5 AI tools for UI UX design

These are the AI tools for UI/UX design worth putting in a real workflow. Figma AI works inside your current design file. Stitch and Uizard create screens elsewhere and leave you to carry them back. Midjourney and Adobe Firefly create image assets, which travel easily because an image is an image anywhere.

Figma AI and Figma Make

Figma has long been the default interface-design tool, and it's a low-risk place to start with AI because, as we’ve mentioned before, the output is directly in the file your team already works in, so nothing has to be rebuilt for handoff.

Figma AI features and Figma Make moved out of beta into general availability on 24 July 2025. Publishing Figma Make files is still in beta.

Figma AI and Figma Make are not the same output: 

  • AI actions inside Figma Design – quick, in-file actions: find assets and designs, replace content, add interactions, rename layers, rewrite/translate/shorten text, and a set of image operations (make and edit images, remove background, boost resolution, expand images, isolate and erase objects, vectorize images). These stay in your existing file, so nothing has to be rebuilt for handoff.
  • First Draft, the text-to-design feature that generates an editable layout from a description, is also part of Figma Design. As of May 2026, this functionality is moving to Figma's agent as its new entry point, in beta with a gradual rollout – plan for it to change if you're building a workflow around it.
  • Figma Make is a separate product: prompt-to-code, producing an interactive, code-backed prototype rather than a standard Figma file. It follows a different handoff path than a normal Dev Mode file, and publishing Figma Make files specifically is still in beta.

From our team's daily use, the features that actually stick are: 

  • Shortening text that does not fit a layout;
  • Removing backgrounds;
  • Editing images with a prompt;
  • Creating responsive mobile variants.

Figma Make picks up where those quick actions stop. Our designers use it to generate edge cases and additional states for already existing screens, such as empty states, error states, and loading indicators. 

"Figma AI also handles responsive mobile versions reasonably well, although I still prefer Claude Design for that type of work. At the moment, Figma Make cannot create a complete user flow from a written description as effectively as Claude Design can. When I tried to get that type of result from Figma Make, I simply wasted time."

This designer now uses Figma Make mainly for edge cases and supporting states rather than full flows.

As for the credit limits, they have not been a bottleneck in Figma for our team so far – the one place a designer did hit a limit was inside Claude, not Figma.

Stitch by Google

Stitch turns one prompt into several plausible directions at once, which makes it useful early in a project. It’s in Google Labs and is the least production-ready tool on this list – none of our designers have used it on a client project, so everything we state below comes from Google's own documentation, not hands-on testing.

On 18 March 2026, Google relaunched it as what it calls an "AI-native software design canvas" for what it calls vibe design - you start by explaining the business objective, or what you want users to feel, rather than starting from a wireframe. 

What this tool does, per Google's documentation:

  • Natural language to high-fidelity UI. Describe an interface you want, and Stitch produces a high-fidelity static design with layout and sample content.
  • Sketch and screenshot input. Upload a hand-drawn wireframe or a screenshot, and Stitch reads it into a digital design.
  • Several variations per prompt. One dashboard prompt returns light and dark treatments, or a cards layout next to a list layout, without redrawing anything.
  • Objective-first prompting. The March 2026 relaunch is built around describing the goal rather than the screen.

On export: Google's original Stitch launch at I/O 2025 documented export to CSS/HTML or Figma. The March 2026 relaunch announcement instead names AI Studio and Antigravity as export destinations, design-system export through an agent-readable DESIGN.md file, and integration through an MCP server and SDK – it doesn't repeat the Figma/CSS export line from the original launch. Because export options can change between announcements, confirm the current product interface before publication and describe only the destinations available in the version you check.

There is a second reason to use Stitch only early on because its output looks finished, which can invite detailed visual feedback at a stage where the direction itself is still an open question. 

Uizard

If speed matters more than fidelity and your audience is internal, Uizard is a reasonable tool. Its Autodesigner produces whole screens from a description – Autodesigner 2.0 on the Pro tier and above, 1.5 on the free plan.

What it does:

  • Text-to-design. Describe an app or website, and Autodesigner produces prototype screens.
  • AI image generation for UI. Get an image sized for the design from a prompt, instead of searching a stock library.
  • Theme generation from examples. Upload a logo or an image, or point at a website, and Uizard produces a matching palette and visual theme.
  • Sketch to wireframe. Turns a hand-drawn sketch into a digital wireframe.
  • Screenshot to mockup. Feed it an image of an existing app or page, and it recreates an editable design. 
  • Focus predictor. A prediction model that shows which parts of a design draw attention first, as a heatmap. Useful for checking whether a call to action is prominent enough – it is a prediction, not user testing, and should never be presented to a client as evidence of how users actually behaved.

Exports:

Uizard's own help documentation lists JPG, PNG, SVG, PDF, and CSS and React for individual components through Handoff Mode. There is no native export to Figma. The docs say you can export a project as an SVG and import it into other tools that support it, including Figma. That import loses layer structure and components, so it is not equivalent to a native Figma file.

Privacy note: Uizard's terms of service (section 8.14) state that designs, prototypes, and screenshots created or uploaded on the Free and Pro plans may be used to fine-tune and train its machine-learning models. Business and Enterprise customer artifacts are excluded from that use under the terms checked on 26 August 2026. Teams handling confidential client work should confirm the current plan terms before uploading files.

Figma AI or Uizard for realistic mockups from text? 

Well, they are doing different jobs. Uizard's Autodesigner 2.0 produces a more complete-looking screen from a cold prompt because it invents a whole visual theme along with the layout. Figma's First Draft produces something less finished but native to your file, so a design system can be applied to it. 

In practice, our designers find the Figma path wins on total time once the output has to become production design, even when the first render looks rougher; for a concept meant only for internal review, Uizard gets you there faster.

"It works reasonably well, especially when you ask it to produce a new page based on other existing pages or an established design system. I could also use it professionally, but Figma (with Figma Make) and Claude Design currently cover my needs, because both function as ecosystems. Claude combines an LLM, design capabilities, and code generation. Figma is also an ecosystem – Figma for the design itself, Figma Make for AI-powered creation, working together. Uizard feels like a separate product by comparison, and I don't see a clear reason to switch to it."

Midjourney

Midjourney doesn't design interfaces and shouldn't be asked to. It generates images, which covers three jobs for a UI designer:

  1. Moodboards and ideation. Concept art to set a tone before any screen exists – minimalist, playful, editorial directions in minutes.
  2. Illustrations and assets. Onboarding illustrations, empty states, hero images for landing pages. This is where most of the practical value is for a product team.
  3. Branding exploration. Logo and mascot brainstorming, with the caveat that AI-generated marks are a starting point for a designer rather than an output. Do not present one as a finished identity.

A small tip from our team: Midjourney generally produces better, more predictable results when you give it a starting image (either a previous generation or a reference photo) rather than prompting from scratch. 

Midjourney runs both on the web app at midjourney.com and in Discord. Per Midjourney's own comparison of the two, most features work on both, but the web app's Editor (with built-in region-based re-generation) and reference-image workflows are more integrated there; Discord requires a few more manual steps, such as hosting an image and copying its URL.

Merge designers tested Midjourney, but none kept it in regular rotation – it didn't fit day-to-day product design work. 

One designer used it on an AI-based product where AI-generated illustrations were a deliberate choice over stock photography, and didn't return to it afterward. 

“We delivered Midjourney images for use in a live product. There were no licensing or rights concerns in that case because the product itself was an AI-based tool. It was therefore logical to use AI-generated Midjourney illustrations rather than real photographs. I also believe the client was more satisfied with AI-generated content than they would have been with real images in that particular case.”

For image-generation tasks, our designers reach for ChatGPT instead, which is stronger at combining several elements into one coherent composition.

Before an AI-generated asset ships, verify the vendor terms, the subscription plan, your client's policy, and the provenance of any source images. Midjourney applies general commercial terms to paid plans, but per Midjourney's own plan comparison, companies with more than $1,000,000 USD in annual gross revenue must use a Pro or Mega plan. Record the tool and plan used for every client asset that reaches production.

Adobe Firefly

Finally, Adobe Firefly finishes assets rather than starting screens. It’s located inside Photoshop, Illustrator, and the Firefly web editor, and it handles the image work that used to be done by hand.

As of Adobe's announcement on 10 March 2026, Generative Fill, Remove, Expand, and Upscale are generally available in the Firefly Image Editor. The AI Assistant in Photoshop (web and mobile) was in public beta as of that same announcement; by June 2026, Adobe had expanded the AI Assistant beyond Photoshop into other Creative Cloud apps.

What each capability does in a UI workflow:

  • Generative fill and remove. Select an area of an image and fill, extend, or clear it with a prompt. Extend a hero image to a wider breakpoint, remove an object from a screenshot, add something that was never there.
  • Text-to-image. Generate images from descriptions in the Firefly web app. Same category as Midjourney, with different licensing terms, which determines it when a client has strict rules about image rights.
  • Asset variation and recoloring. In Illustrator, Firefly generates palette variations and style tweaks across an icon set or illustration. Faster than hand recoloring, and it keeps the whole set consistent rather than drifting item by item.

Commercial use: per Adobe's own Firefly FAQ, "for features without the beta label, you can use Firefly-generated outputs in your commercial projects. For features that are in beta, you can use the Firefly-generated outputs for your commercial projects unless explicitly stated otherwise in the product." In short: Adobe generally allows commercial use, but check the beta status of the specific feature you're using, and Adobe's current terms, before an asset ships in client work.

It's not a daily-driver tool for our team the way Figma AI is, but for a targeted edit on an existing asset it reduces manual image-editing work. Not every designer on our team uses Firefly – those who work primarily on interfaces rather than graphic assets haven't needed it.

Supporting AI tools that are not UI generators

Beyond the big names above, there are several other AI-driven tools and assistants that UX/UI designers are using in 2026 in their work:

ChatGPT. Not a layout tool in the Figma sense, but our team uses it daily for design-adjacent work: generating images from reference photos, combining several elements into one composition, summarizing user-research transcripts, and drafting journey-map notes. Check anything factual it produces.

Codex feels slightly more convenient because it has a feature that lets you leave notes indicating what needs to be fixed and where in the design. That significantly speeds up the workflow.”

Claude and Claude Design. Claude Design handles full visual design. One of our designers runs a workflow where a PRD written in Claude.ai feeds into Claude Design for visualization, then into Claude Code for a working front-end prototype.

"One project is being managed almost entirely through Claude Design. The process begins with writing the project or feature description in an AI tool. We then create the design and build a prototype. The prototype is handed over to the front-end developer, who uses it as a structural foundation. Developers can leave comments, and in most cases I make the requested revisions. As a result, the design moves into development with significantly fewer iterations than were required in our previous process."

Other image generators. OpenAI's current recommended image model is GPT Image 2. Separately, open-source models in the Stable Diffusion family, Leonardo.ai, Nano Banana, and Canva's image generator are other options worth testing for your own use case – they are distinct products, not variations on the same tool.

Which tool fits your workflow?

  • Already working in Figma? Start with Figma AI – there's no migration cost, and layer renaming plus asset search alone justify turning it on.
  • Early UI exploration, direction not locked yet? Compare Stitch and Uizard, and keep them out of the production path.
  • Need product imagery or asset edits? Compare Midjourney (moodboards, illustrations, concept art) and Adobe Firefly (targeted edits, where licensing clarity for beta features matters more).
  • Heading to production handoff? Prefer whichever output stays editable, respects your design system, and fits your existing development workflow – that usually means staying inside Figma once a direction is locked.
  • Confidential client work? Check training data, privacy, and plan terms  (see Uizard's note above) before uploading files to any AI tool.

Limits, privacy, and commercial use

  • Uizard: designs and screenshots on the Free and Pro plans may be used to train Uizard's models; Business and Enterprise plans are excluded (terms section 8.14, checked 26 August 2026).
  • Midjourney: general commercial terms apply to paid plans, but a company with more than $1,000,000 USD in annual gross revenue must be on the Pro or Mega plan.
  • Adobe Firefly: commercial use is generally allowed for GA features; beta features may have different restrictions as stated in the product – check the specific feature before shipping.
  • Across all tools: license terms depend on the vendor, the plan tier, and your region. Confirm the specific terms before an AI-generated asset ships in a paid product, and get legal review when the stakes justify it.

How to integrate AI tools into your workflow

Start by noting which tasks in your design process are tedious or repetitive (resizing assets for different breakpoints, renaming layers, generating dummy content, etc.). There’s likely an AI tool or plugin that already handles it. 

If you work in a team, share what works. One designer's prompt library or a shared Figma plugin shortlist saves the whole team from re-discovering the same things. 

If you are starting from scratch:

  1. Turn on the AI features in the tool you already pay for. For most product teams, that means Figma AI. There is no migration cost, and the layer renaming and asset search alone justify the effort.
  2. Add one image tool. Firefly if licensing clarity matters to your clients, Midjourney if visual range matters more. Running both is cheap. Running neither means someone is still trawling stock libraries.
  3. Add a generation tool for exploration only. Stitch or Uizard, used before a direction is locked, and never in the production path.
  4. Only then consider building something. If the same manual step survives all three steps above, it is a candidate for a small internal tool rather than another subscription.

That volume came from a design system and a disciplined process, with AI tools removing repetitive work from it – not the other way around. A team without a component library doesn't get faster by adding a generator; it gets inconsistent screens faster.

Frequently asked questions

Which AI UI design tool is best for a product designer who already uses Figma?

For a team already working in Figma, Figma AI is usually the lowest-friction starting point because many AI-assisted actions stay inside the existing design file. That doesn't make it the best tool for every task: Stitch and Uizard can support early exploration, while Midjourney and Firefly create or edit visual assets rather than production interface files.

Are AI design tools good enough to replace a UX designer?

No. They generate layouts and assets. They do not decide what a product should do, what a user needs, or which of several directions is right for a business. Every tool here produces a first pass that a designer still has to judge.

What do AI design tools actually cost for a small team?

Cost depends on seats, billing cycle, and generation credits. As one example: four Figma Professional full seats at $16 each, one Midjourney Standard subscription at $30, and one Firefly Standard plan at $9.99 comes to $103.99 a month, calculated from vendor prices checked on 26 August 2026, monthly billing. Treat this as illustrative, not an average market price – the variable that actually matters is how fast your team burns through AI credits, not the seat price.

Can AI-generated designs be used commercially?

Commercial use depends on the vendor terms, subscription plan, client policy, and source assets. Midjourney applies general commercial terms to paid plans but requires the Pro or Mega plan for companies above $1,000,000 USD in annual gross revenue. Adobe generally permits commercial use, subject to feature-specific or beta restrictions. Uizard's terms note that generated output may not be unique or protected by copyright. Record the tool, plan, and asset provenance for anything that ships, and get legal review when the risk justifies it.

Can an AI design tool use uploaded client files for training?

It depends on the vendor and plan. Uizard's terms, for example, say designs and screenshots on the Free and Pro plans may be used for model training, while Business and Enterprise customer artifacts are excluded. Check the current terms of any tool before uploading confidential product designs, research, or client assets.
